Understanding Genital Herpes
Genital herpes is caused by herpes simplex virus type 1 or type 2. The virus remains in the body after infection and may cause recurring symptoms, although some people have mild symptoms or none at all.
There is no cure that removes herpes simplex virus from the body. Antiviral medication can help control symptoms, shorten outbreaks, and—when used as daily suppressive therapy—reduce how often outbreaks occur. Treatment does not eliminate the possibility of transmission.
