About Treatment

What Is Prescription Bimatoprost?

Bimatoprost ophthalmic solution 0.03% is a prescription treatment for eyelash hypotrichosis, the medical term for inadequate or insufficient eyelashes. It is intended to increase eyelash growth, including length, thickness, and darkness.

How it is used

When prescribed for eyelash growth, the solution is applied once nightly to the skin along the upper eyelid margin at the base of the eyelashes using a sterile applicator. It should not be applied to the lower eyelid.

What to expect

Changes develop gradually with consistent use. Applying more than the prescribed amount will not make eyelashes grow faster. If treatment is stopped, eyelashes are expected to gradually return toward their previous appearance.

Individual Evaluation

Is Eyelash Growth Treatment Right for You?

A telehealth consultation helps determine whether prescription treatment may be suitable or whether an eye examination or other evaluation should come first.

Your provider will review

  • Your eyelash concerns and treatment goals
  • Eye conditions, injuries, infections, or prior eye surgery
  • Current eye drops and other medications
  • Allergies and relevant medical history
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding when applicable

Additional evaluation may be needed if you have

  • Active eye irritation, inflammation, infection, or unexplained symptoms
  • A history of abnormal eye pressure or glaucoma treatment
  • Recent eye trauma or surgery
  • A sudden change in vision
  • Possible medication-related or unexplained eyelash loss

How It Works

Three Steps to Personalized Care

Step 1

Book Online

Choose a convenient appointment time for a private telehealth consultation.

Step 2

Meet Your Provider

Discuss your goals, medical history, eye health, medications, and treatment questions.

Step 3

Receive Next Steps

If treatment is appropriate, your provider will explain the prescription, application, precautions, and follow-up plan.

A consultation does not guarantee a prescription. Your provider may recommend an eye examination or other care when needed.

Treatment Safety

Understand Possible Side Effects and Precautions

Prescription eyelash treatment is not appropriate for everyone. Your provider will review the potential benefits and risks with you before prescribing.

Possible effects include

  • Eye itching, redness, irritation, or dryness
  • Darkening of the eyelid skin
  • Hair growth where the solution repeatedly touches nearby skin
  • Differences between the eyes in eyelash growth or appearance
  • Increased brown coloring of the iris, which is likely permanent

Contact a healthcare professional promptly for

  • A new eye condition, injury, or infection
  • A sudden decrease or change in vision
  • Eye or eyelid reactions that concern you
  • Planned or recent eye surgery
  • Questions about using glaucoma or eye-pressure medication

Remove contact lenses before application. They may generally be reinserted 15 minutes afterward. Follow the directions provided with your prescription and do not share applicators.
