What Causes Cold Sores?
Cold sores—also called fever blisters or oral herpes—are most often caused by herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1). They usually appear on or around the lips and may return periodically after the initial infection.
There is no cure that removes HSV from the body, but antiviral medicine may shorten an outbreak or help manage recurrent outbreaks. Treatment tends to be most useful when started at the earliest warning symptoms.
